Overview

  • May be divided into isoenzymes found principally in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, liver and red blood cells - not organ specific, but useful in assessment of tissue damage.
  • Longer half-life than creatine kinase.

  • Varies between laboratories (electrophoresis needed for LDH isoenymes).

Availability

  • Widely available.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • Test results most useful when interpreted in conjunction with other laboratory results and clinical findings.

LDH without isoenzymes is so non-specific that it is rarely interpretively useful.
