Overview

  • Derived from breakdown of creatine in muscle.
  • Excreted by kidneys.
  • Not influenced by protein metabolism (unlike urea).
  • Important marker of renal function; levels controlled by excretion rate, but relatively insensitive.
  • Clearance is identical to inulin and therefore accurately measures glomerular filtration rate.
