Indications

  • Treatment of dermatophytosis in rabbits Ringworm.
Terbinafine is off license in rabbits and the responsibility for its use lies with the prescribing veterinary surgeon.
  • Terbinafine is highly efficacious against the Microsporum canis Microsporum canis, M. gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes Trichophyton spp, with a reported minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.03 µg/mL.
  • In rabbits, experimentally infected with aspergillosis and coccidiomycosis, terbinafine administered at 100 or 200 mg/kg PO q24h had no significant effect on disease progression.

Interactions

With other drugs

  • Fewer potential drug interactions than ketoconazole as does not inhibit cytochrome P450 system.
  • Rifampicin:
    • Plasma concentrations of terbinafine decreased.
    • Rifampicin increased the clearance of terbinafine by 100% (human datasheet).
  • Cimetidine:
    • Plasma concentrations of terbinafine increased.
    • Cimetidine Cimetidine decreased the clearance of terbinafine by 30% (human datasheet).
