Introduction

  • An uncommon infection in rabbits.
  • Cause: infection with Listeria monocytogenes Listeria monocytogenes - first described in 1926 in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs.
  • Signs: uterine infection, abortion and sudden death; rarely neurological (head tilt).
  • Diagnosis: radiology and ultrasonography to rule out other potential causes of uterine enlargement. Cytology, bacterial isolation and post mortem signs. Cerebrospinal fluid culture if suspected bacterial infection causing neurological signs.
  • Treatment: for uterine infection, supportive care and once stabilized ovariohysterectomy.

Presenting signs

Central nervous system signs are rare in rabbits.

Acute presentation

Public health considerations

  • L. monocytogenesis a zoonosis and it causes pneumonia-like symptoms, septicemia, meningitis, encephalitis and abortion in humans.
  • Especially severe in immunocompromised individuals, including pregnant women.
  • L. monocytogenesis an environmental contaminant.
