Endometrial aneurysm

Introduction

  • Cause: unclear, congenital malformation suspected.
  • Signs: hematuria, anorexia, lethargy.
  • Diagnosis: radiography, ultrasound, CT, exploratory laparotomy, histopathology.
  • Treatment: ovariohysterectomy.
  • Prognosis: good if treated in a timely manner.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Not known in rabbits.
  • In other species, may be related to congenital defects, increased intraluminal pressure in the uterus, or trauma.
  • May be related to hormonal factors, eg high progesterone, following pseudopregnancy Pseudopregnancy.

Predisposing factors

General

  • Unneutered female rabbit.

Pathophysiology

  • Connective tissue abnormalities cause weakening of the vein wall.
  • Localized venous dilation develops, and secondary thrombi may result.
  • Multiple blood-filled endometrial varices (veins) rupture periodically into lumen of the uterus.
  • Has occurred concurrently with vaginal aneurysm in one rabbit.

Timecourse

  • Variable.
  • May be incidental and asymptomatic in older does.
  • Clinical signs often develop rapidly in symptomatic does.

Epidemiology

  • Rare - infrequently reported.
