Oronasal fistula repair
Introduction
- To close oronasal communication.
Uses
- Repair oronasal fistula following:
- Traumatic palatal cleft, eg post-RTA.
- Tooth extraction Dental extraction (rare in cat).
- Infection/neoplasia.
Alternative techniques
- Double pancake flap closure is used in dogs but is not suitable in most cats.
- This is an advanced procedure which has a high risk of complications.
- Often results in oronasal fistulae in palate.
Simple flap closure of extraction defects works in >99% cats.
Decision taking
Criteria for choosing test
- Close fistula immediately if created during tooth extraction. May be able to avoid further flap surgery at a later date.
- Evaluate 4-6 weeks following initial event.
- Even small fistula may result in rhinitis (although this may be subclinical).
- Closure is always indicated except in debilitated animals unfit for general anesthesia.
