Biopsy: synovia
Introduction
- Arthrotomy, the usual method for synovial biopsy, allows examination of joint and removal of specimen (membrane 2-4mm wide, length dependent on size of joint) from most suitable area.
Uses
- Diagnosis of suspected inflammatory arthropathies:
- Degenerative joint disease (DJD).
- Immune-mediated arthritides.
- Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Diagnosis of joint infections.
- Confirmation of diagnosis of synovial neoplasia:
- Synovial sarcoma Synovial sarcoma.
- Synovioma.
- Chondrosarcoma Chondrosarcoma.
- Osteochrondromatosis.
- Specimen may be used for histopathology, microbiological culture or immunohistopathologic examinations.
Technical problems
- Synovial membrane histopathology - overlap between DJD and immune-mediated arthropathy requires cautious interpretation.
Alternative techniques
- Synovial fluid aspiration.
