Electrochemotherapy

ffelis

Synonym(s): Tumor treatment, ECT

Introduction

  • Electrochemotherapy is a technique that delivers electrical pulses to a tumor, enhancing the penetration of an intravenous or intralesional chemotherapeutic agent, eg bleomycin, into the tumoral cells. It is used to treat a variety of canine and feline cancers, eg squamous cell carcinomas, melanomas, soft tissue sarcomas and mast cell tumors. All patients require a deep sedation or short anesthetic to facilitate treatment. Five to eight minutes after the intravenous chemotherapy injection, short electrical pulses are delivered with a needle or plate electrode into the tumor surface or on its surface. The electrical pulses are generated by an electroporator. Patients may require a short hospitalization period following treatment to ensure that they experience a good recovery.
