Introduction

  • Cause: Paraspidodera uncinata infection.
  • Signs: usually asymptomatic, but heavy infection: diarrhea, unthriftiness.
  • Diagnosis: ova in fecal flotation; may be found incidentally at necropsy in cecum.
  • Treatment: ivermectin, piperazine adipate, piperazine citrate, thiabendazole; if diarrhea, supportive care including supplemental vitamin C.
  • Prognosis: good.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Infection with the nematode Paraspidodera uncinata.

Predisposing factors

General

  • Poor sanitation.
  • Stress causing immunosuppression.

Specific

  • Asymptomatic individuals in colony may be shedding.

Pathophysiology

  • Small worm approximately 25 mm in length.
  • It is found primarily in the cecum but sometimes in the colonic mucosa.
  • It does not migrate beyond the intestinal mucosa.

Timecourse

  • Life cycle is complete in 65 days.

Epidemiology

  • Life cycle: direct.
  • Transmission is by ingestion of infective eggs.
