Contributor(s):

Vetstream Ltd

Synonym(s): Hairless, Skinnies

Introduction

General information

  • The Skinny pig isn't technically a breed, but a recessive genetic mutation.
  • One of two hairless guinea pigs seen today, the other being the Baldwin Baldwin.
  • They most likely originate from laboratory guinea pigs called IAF Hairless, which were a spontaneous mutation of the Pink eyed white Hartley laboratory guinea pigs at the Institut Armand Frappier in Canada in 1978. It is thought that some of these inadvertently entered the pet trade through a breeder that reportedly crossed the IAF Hairless with Teddies.
  • Skinny pigs are no different to normal guinea pigs apart from the fact they have no hair.
  • The optimal temperature range for a Skinny pig is 24-26°C/75-79°F; slightly higher than for a haired guinea pig (17-24°C/65-75°F).
  • The Skinny pig has gained popularity by pet owners and cavy fanciers over recent years, especially in Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, and Russia as well as in the United States where it was introduced in the late 1990s.
