Dystocia

4ferrets

Introduction

  • Problems in parturition; an inability to give birth.
  • Cause: large litter, oversized fetus.
  • Signs: straining, exhaustion.
  • Diagnosis: radiography, ultrasonography.
  • Treatment: caesarean, antibiotics, NSAIDs, ovariohysterectomy.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • This is not a common problem in ferrets.
  • Most jills can deliver the kits with no problems, unless there is a very large litter: normal parturition in the jill usually takes 2-3 h.
  • Problems that may complicate parturition include oversized fetus with congenital defects such as spina bifida.
  • Large kits (due to small litters) can also cause dystocia.
  • Positional problems may also cause dystocia even with small kits, eg when two kits meet in the birth canal.
  • A very small jill may have problems with normal sized fetus delivery.

Predisposing factors

General

  • Large litter.
  • Large fetus(es).

Epidemiology

  • Dystocia is not a common problem in jills.
  • It has been reported that dystocia occurs at a rate of about 1% pregnant jills.
