Overview

  • Circulating white blood cells (WBC).
  • All leukocytes produced in the bone marrow except lymphocytes which are produced in lymph nodes, spleen and lymphoid follicles.
  • Granulocytes consisting of neutrophils   Blood: neutrophils  , eosinophils   Blood: eosinophils  and basophils   Blood: basophils  .
  • Agranulocytes or mononuclear cells consisting of lymphocytes   Blood: lymphocytes  and monocytes   Blood: monocytes  .
  • Total WBC count affected by relative changes in the different cell types.
  • The metabolic status of the horse can have a profound effect on the white cell picture.
