Introduction

  • Lasers were first used in small animals in the 1970s and in the horse in the early 1980s.
  • CO2 lasers were the first type used, particularly for skin incisions, but transendoscopic treatment of upper respiratory tract problems through the use of neodymium yttrium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser has become commonplace.
  • Diode lasers are becoming more popular for transendoscopic laser surgery as they are relatively inexpensive and are generally small and portable Laser surgery: diode laser unit.
