Cancer therapy overview

Introduction

  • The conventional treatment options for horses with cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. 
  • Surgery is usually the most effective means of removal of localized tumors and, where the lesion and location are amenable, offers the opportunity of cure for benign tumors.
  • Radiotherapy may be used alone or as an adjunct to surgery but is only effective for local disease, whereas chemotherapy is indicted systemically in the treatment of systemic malignant tumors, eg lymphoma Lymphosarcoma overview or as an intralesional therapy for some other tumors such as sarcoids Sarcoid.
  • Laser surgical resection Laser surgery overview is a useful and effective method of treatment for a number of skin tumors such as melanomas, some sarcoids, and mast cell tumors.
  • Immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy Photodynamic therapy, and a variety of intralesional therapies may also be indicated, depending on the tumor type.
