Introduction

  • The cardiovascular system is important in maintaining oxygen delivery to the tissues.
  • Oxygen delivery is dependent upon the lungs delivering oxygen to the blood, the hemoglobin concentration and the tissue perfusion.
  • Horses have a large cardiovascular reserve and may not increase their heart rate in response to increased sympathetic tone but increase the stroke volume to increase the cardiac output.
