Heart: sinus arrhythmia

Introduction

  • Sinus arrhythmia corresponds to periodic waxing and waning of heart rate.
  • Cause: changes in vagal tone.
  • Signs: irregular rhythm.
  • Diagnosis: ECG, auscultation.
  • Treatment: none required.
  • Prognosis: excellent.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Associated with variation in vagal tone at rest, and soon after exercise in some horses.
  • Variation in heart rate can be coupled with the respiratory cycle (respiratory sinus arrhythmia).
