Introduction

Uses

To collect a urine sample for examination Urinalysis.
To empty the bladder prior to surgery.
To allow passage of urine when urethra has functional or physical obstruction Urethra: obstruction , eg neoplasia Urethra: neoplasia or calculus Urolithiasis.
For hydropulsion of urethral calculi.
To monitor urine output.
As part of procedure for prostatic wash Prostate flush.
To introduce radiographic contrast for:
- Retrograde urethrography Radiography: urethrography.
- Cystography Radiography: cystography.

Advantages

Simple and quick to do.
Relatively minimal risk of complications.
Requires minimal restraint.

Disadvantages

Can be impossible to catheterize some patients, eg with obstructed urethra.
