Uses

Advantages

  • Rapid removal of renal uroliths Kidney calculi - radiograph VD (versus medical dissolution).

Disadvantages

  • Damage to renal parenchyma.
  • Renal function impaired (up to 20-40%) for short period.

Alternative techniques

  • Medical management of renal uroliths unless renal function deteriorating, uroliths not amenable to dissolution, or presence of severe pain or infection.
