Tests

Methodologies

  • Chylomicron test: refrigerate an aliquot of serum overnight; chylomicrons float to the top.
  • Cholesterol measurement: several methods but enzymatic method most common.
  • Triglyceride measurement: spectrophotometric or enzymatic methods.
  • Lipoprotein electrophoresis: requires specialized equipment; lack of diagnostic specificity.

Validity

Sensitivity

  • Relatively high.

Specificity

  • Low.

Technique (intrinsic) limitations

  • Information regarding cause of hyperlipidemia or hypolipidemia.

Technician (extrinsic) limitations
