Indications

  • Used to expand and maintain blood volume in shock due to septicemia Shock: septic and burns Fluid therapy: for burns.
  • May be used in the immediate short term to manage hemorrhage until blood is available Fluid therapy: for hemorrhage.
  • Rarely required when shock is due to water and sodium depletion.
  • Dextran 40 increase plasma volume by 50% at one hour and 110% at 2 hours. Dextran 70 increases plasma volume by 38%.
