Adrenal: anatomy and physiology

Anatomy

  • The adrenal gland can be divided anatomically into:
    • Cortex.
    • Zona glomerulosa.
    • Zona fasciculata.
    • Zona reticularis.
    • Medulla.
  • Aldosterone is produced in the zona glomerulosa while the other two areas of the adrenal cortex produce cortisol and androgens.
  • The medulla produces mainly catecholamines.
