Introduction

• Depressed fractures of distal part of zygomatic process often undiagnosed because initially cause little problem - osseous callus develops with time, causing decreased jaw movement.
• Signs: difficulty eating, atrophy of masticatory muscles, malocclusion.
• Treatment: surgical excision of caudodistal zygomatic process.
• Prognosis: good.

Etiology

• Trauma.

Pathophysiology

• Initially may cause little problem.
• Often go undiagnosed in absence of other trauma in area.
• With time, osseous callus forms causing progressive dimminution of jaw movement.
• Reduced jaw movement causes difficulty eating, atrophy of masticatory muscles, malocclusion.
