Introduction

  • Uncommon.
  • Pes varus resulting from genetic (autosomal recessive) specific distal tibial deformity has been specific in Dachshund.
  • Cause: tibial dysplasia rather than growth plate trauma.
  • Treatment: open, distal tibial wedge osteotomy stabilized by modified Type II external skeletal fixation.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Autosomal recessive genetic component.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Breed - Dachshund. Genetic etiology because litter-mates have been affected.

Pathophysiology

  • Distal tibial deformity resulting from tibial dysplasia or growth plate trauma.
  • Retardation of medial tibia growth of the distal tibial growth plate.

Timecourse

  • 5-6 months until fully grown.
