Introduction

  • Corns are a common cause of lameness in sight hounds.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Mechanical although foreign body penetration may be implicated in some cases.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Racing and breed.

Specific

  • Concomitant foot abnormalities resulting in an abnormal weight bearing on the pad.

Pathophysiology

  • Circular hyperkeratosis causing a thickened hard area in the weight bearing area of the pad Greyhound: paw pad corn 01.

Timecourse

  • The lesion causes a progressive lameness that will not resolve naturally.

Epidemiology

  • In racing animals it is mostly seen from 2 years of age. In retired or pet dogs it is usually seen from 5 years of age.
