Introduction

Pathophysiology

  • Unclear.
  • ?Puppies during play rub muzzle and chin on hard, rough surfaces → hair of short-coated breeds breaks off below skin surface → inflammation of follicle → pilar canal open to bacterial invasion → sterile or secondarily infected furunculosis Skin: muzzle folliculitis and furunculosis plus vitiligo.
  • ?Follicular dilation and damage due to accumulation of sebaceous secretions → rupture of follicle → infection → hair as foreign body.
