Introduction

  • Rare syndrome.
  • Cause: chemotherapy or catastrophic disease → damages shaft of growing hairs.
  • Signs: characterized by widespread excessive hair shedding.
  • Diagnosis: symmetrical alopecia and other factors.
  • Treatment: none.
  • Prognosis: guarded due to underlying factors.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Interference with anagen by antimitotic drugs, infectious diseases, metabolic diseases.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Catastrophic disease.
  • Chemotherapy.

Specific

  • Infectious diseases, eg causes of severe acute pyrexia.
  • Metabolic diseases with severe and acute onset.

Pathophysiology

  • Catastrophic disease or chemotherapy → interferes with anagen phase of hair growth → abnormalities of hair follicle and shaft → break easily → excessive hair loss within days of insult.
