Introduction

• The ovarian remnant syndrome occurs when functional, residual ovarian tissue triggers clinical signs of estrus in a female dog having previously undergone ovariohysterectomy (OVH) Ovariohysterectomy. The ovarian remnant syndrome occurs as a result of failure to remove all ovarian tissue during the OVH.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

• Incomplete surgical removal of ovarian tissue.

Pathophysiology

• Failure to remove both entire ovaries, presence of anatomically abnormal ovarian tissue (fragmentation into the broad ligament), or rarely, a supernumerary ovary can cause the syndrome.
• Neoplasia in ovarian remnants is more common than in entire bitches.
• Stump pyometra has only been observed in association with an ovarian remnant and does not occur on its own.
