Introduction

• Cause: familial disease in certain breeds. Autosomal recessive inheritance in Shih Tzu and Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier.
• Signs: same as chronic renal failure Kidney: chronic kidney disease (CKD) , eg polydipsia/polyuria, weight loss/poor growth usually at a young age, signs related to renal secondary hyperparathyroidism.
• Diagnosis: history, signs, radiography, ultrasonography, biochemistry. Definitive diagnosis by histology. 
• Treatment: supportive only.
• Prognosis: variable depending on severity of the disease and degree of renal dysfunction. 

Pathogenesis

Etiology

• Congenital. Autosomal recessive inheritance in Shih Tzu and Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier. 
• Possible role of allelic variation in the promoter of the canine cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) gene. 
• Familial.

• Breed.

Pathophysiology

• Abnormal development of renal parenchyma → immature glomeruli and other inappropriate structures → renal failure.

Timecourse

• Insidious in young puppies over weeks-months.
