Introduction

  • Failure of fusion of primary palate, uni- or bilateral.
  • May be associated with cleft palate Cleft lip and palate.
  • Treatment: surgical correction at 10-12 weeks.
  • Prognosis: surgery often successful.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Genetic, stress, teratogens.

Pathophysiology

  • Failure of fusion of primary palate (premaxilla, cartilaginous septum, lip) during gestation.
