Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia

Synonym(s): Thrombasthenic thrombopathia, GT


Introduction

  • Cause: inherited autosomal recessive functional platelet defect.
  • Signs: spontaneous hemorrhage, bleeding after surgery or trauma.
  • Diagnosis: DNA test in Great Pyrenees and Otterhounds; flow cytometry in any breed.
  • Treatment: no specific treatment, but blood products may be necessary after trauma or surgery.
  • Prognosis: guarded.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Genetic functional platelet defect.
  • Autosomal recessive inheritance.

Predisposing factors

Specific

  • Breed:
    • Inherited genetic disorder in Otterhounds and Great Pyrenees.
    • Has also been identified in mixed-breed dogs.

Pathophysiology

  • Dysfunction or absence of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa on platelets.
  • GPIIb/IIIa is a platelet fibrinogen receptor required for platelet aggregation.
