Introduction

  • Diarrhea due to congestive heart failure Heart: congestive heart failure.
  • May contribute to cardiac cachexia.
  • Cause: due to intestinal mucosal congestion causing edema in lamina propria.
  • Treatment: symptomatic.

Pathogenesis

Pathophysiology

  • Elevated central venous pressure → abnormal drainage from intestine, blood and lymph → edema → may cause increased intestinal permeability and diarrhea.

Timecourse

  • Depends on severity of congestive heart failure.
