Introduction

  • Uncommon-rare disease reported only in the Doberman pinscher Dobermann.
  • No age or gender predisposition.
  • Cause: unknown; peripheral neuropathy or myopathy is suspected.
  • Signs: flexion of one or both pelvic limbs, pelvic limb weakness, atrophy of pelvic limb muscles (particularly gastrocnemius).
  • Diagnosis: history, physical examination and neurologic examination Neurological examination. Electrodiagnostic testing and histopathology of muscle Biopsy: muscle and/or nerve biopsies Biopsy: nerve may contribute.
  • Treatment: none known.
  • Prognosis: good-excellent for functional pet.

Pathophysiology

Timecourse

  • Dogs presenting with flexion of one pelvic limb usually progress to show involvement of both pelvic limbs within several months.

Epidemiology

  • Unknown; sporadic cases reported.
