Introduction

  • Congenital condition in which normal skin tissue is at an abnormal site Eye epibulbar dermoid 01.
  • Signs: corneal opacities, hairs growing from cornea.
  • Diagnosis: clinical signs, age.
  • Treatment: surgical removal.
  • Prognosis: good.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Congenital - impaired differentiation of eyelid/corneal tissue.

Pathophysiology

  • Embryological defect → impaired differentiation of eyelid tissue → skin on conjunctiva/cornea.
  • Dermoid may consist of connective tissue, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, fat.
  • Larger lesions may physically impair vision.
