Cornea: laceration, perforation

Introduction

  • Cause: traumatic injury.
  • Signs: corneal opacity, hyphema, blepharospasm, uveitis.
  • Diagnosis: examination.
  • Treatment: foreign bodies should be removed. Broad spectrum (topical and possibly also systemic) antibiotic therapy is essential.
  • Prognosis: good if early effective treatment.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Brachycephalic breeds.
  • Active breeds.

Pathophysiology

  • Sharp or blunt trauma to globe or cornea can cause corneal perforation or rupture. This will move anterior to plug the defect in the cornea → the anterior chamber will collapse. Uveitis will be moderate to severe.
  • Acute onset of pain.

Timecourse

  • Sudden onset.
  • Healing can be slow.
