Introduction

• Inflamed eyelids .
• Causes: generalized skin disease, eg demodicosis, autoimmune skin disease, dermatophytosis.
• Treatment: often need systemic antibiosis +/- warm compresses; oral/topical corticosteroids.
• Prognosis: self-trauma is common complication; Staphylococcal blepharitis can be difficult to resolve.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

• May be primary disease of eyelids or part of generalized dermatopathy.

• Sarcoptic mange Skin: sarcoptic mange.
• Demodectic mange Skin: demodectic mange.

• Dermatophytosis (ringworm) Skin: dermatophytosis (MicrosporumandTrichophytonspp most common).

• Juvenile pyoderma Juvenile cellulitis.
• Bacterial blepharitis (may be chronic) - oftenStaphylococcusspp/Streptococcusspp.
• Hordeolum (external stye).
• Chalazion (internal stye).

• Atopy Skin: atopy.
• Food.
• Contact Skin: allergic contact dermatitis.
• Drugs.

• Uveodermatological syndrome.
• Pemphigus diseases Skin: pemphigus erythematosus Skin: pemphigus vegetans Skin: bullous pemphigoid.

• Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism.
• Hyperadrenocorticism Hyperadrenocorticism.

• Keratoconjunctivitis sicca Keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

• Seborrheic dermatitis Skin: primary seborrhea.

• Secondary to ocular irritation.

• Adenoma and papilloma most common.

Predisposing factors

• Older dogs predisposed (9-10 years).

Pathophysiology

• Underlying skin disease or infection (Staphylococcusspp often isolated) → inflammation of eyelids. If abscess formation may → cicatricial entropion Entropion or ectropion Ectropion.
• Many possible etiologies.
• Allergic response to bacterial toxins may exacerbate the condition.

Timecourse

• Depends on cause.
