Introduction

  • Unwanted threat and attack that occurs when dog perceives a threat to dog or owner - whether or not the threat is real.

Pathogenesis

Etiology

  • Inherent tendency to guarding behavior and poor socialization will exacerbate the problem.

Predisposing factors

General
  • Lack of exposure resulting in fearfulness.
  • Trained to be guard dog.
  • Problem exacerbated in the long-term by physical punishment by owner or excitement of owner (reinforces behavior).

Specific

  • Trained to guard owner and behavior reinforced (innate selection for trait in breed).

Pathophysiology

  • Perceived threat → threat/attack behavior by dog towards source of perceived threat.
