Taxonomy

  • Family: Trombiculidae.
  • Genus: Neotrombicula/Trombicula.

Distribution

  • Most common on damp (but well-drained) chalky soils, on grassland, cornfields, heathland and scrubby woodland, and least common on clay soils.
  • Seasonal: July-September.

Significance

  • Highly pruritic Skin: neotrombicula autumnalis infestation.
  • Interdigital dermatitis with pruritus in dogs walking over infested soils in late summer and autumn.
  • Lesions also seen on ear pinnae, other thin, lightly-pigmented skin, the head and the flanks of dogs and cats.
