Introduction

General information

  • In Newfoundland the breed was used by fishermen to help pull nets ashore and to pull boats. Still used today for various hauling activities, particularly in sea rescue work with the French emergency services.
  • A very friendly and happy dog, is good with children and readily obedience trained.
  • Particularly suited to cold climates, but not an urban dog.
  • Dense, coarse, oily coat requires regular grooming.
  • A water-loving dog with a strong desire to rescue people in the water, whether or not they need it.
  • In some countries, the Landseer color variety is classed as a separate breed.
