Introduction

General information

  • Originated in the Estrela mountain region of Portugal. Used extensively for the herding and guarding of sheep.
  • By nature a calm but dominant dog, it makes a good guard dog.
  • Not suitable to the urban environment; it prefers hotter climates and the dense, double coat requires very regular grooming, particularly in the long coated variety.
  • Good in family life but has a very loud bark.
