Introduction

General information

  • An ancient breed originating in Switzerland for use as a livestock herder and cart puller. Selective breeding has left a legacy of unreliability and unprovoked aggression in some lines.
  • Unsuitable for the urban environment or hotter climates. The Bernese prefers to live and sleep outside and prefers the colder weather.
  • Affectionate and sometimes sloppy, they are readily obedience trained but are probably best suited to the experienced owner.
