Recently identified neurotoxin as a likely cause of equine grass sickness.
Researchers have recently identified a neurotoxin produced by pasture microbes to be the likely cause of equine grass sickness. This toxin acts similarly to snake venom. This breakthrough has the potential to lead to new treatments and improved diagnostics for this devastating disease.
Key aspects of the work are summarised in a special editorial in the January 2025 issue of the Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ), which is also available online.
