Graham qualified from Bristol Veterinary School, UK in 1979 before gaining his RCVS certificates in Equine Orthopaedics and Equine Stud Medicine in practice. During this time he gained his Certificate in Equine Orthopaedics and Diploma in Equine Stud Medicine. In 1987 he joined Glasgow University as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery and Reproduction. Here, he also ran the equine hospital and was a consultant surgeon and clinician. In 1994 Graham gained a PhD by thesis on Neonatal Foal Ophthalmology, and Fellowship of the RCVS by examination in ophthalmology. In 1998 he set up a private consultancy practice, Flanders Veterinary Services, based in the Scottish Borders.
