Taxonomy
- Phylum: Apicomplexa.
- Class: Sporozoasida.
- Order: Eucoccidiorida.
- Family: Eimeriidae.
- Species: thirteen species known to parasitize rabbits, including intestinalis, irresidua, magna, media, perforans and stiedae.
Distribution
- Isolated from:
- Groups of rabbits and from individual rabbits; both in the wild and in pet rabbits.
- Commercial, domestic and wild rabbits.
Significance
- Cause of intestinal coccidiosis Coccidiosis in rabbits although most infections sub-clinical.
- Typically result in reduced protection, low weight gain and diarrhea.
- Young rabbits more often affected; often at the time of weaning.
- Eimeria magna and Eimeria irresidua are the 2 most common pathogenic species of intra-intestinal coccida affecting rabbits.
