Etymology

  • Gk: trepein - turn + Gk: nema - thread.
  • L: cuniculi - rabbit, underground passage.

Distribution

  • Reported mainly in commercial rabbitries in the United States.
  • Reported worldwide in pet rabbits.

Significance

  • Causes venereal spirochetosis in rabbits Spirochetosis.
  • Lesions are usually limited to vulval or preputial skin and the mucocutaneous junctions around the eyes, nose and lips.
  • Mainly of significance in research and commercial rabbit colonies.
  • Prevalence appears to increase with age.
  • A closely-related species has been found in wild hares in The Netherlands.
