Etymology
- Gk: trepein - turn + Gk: nema - thread.
- L: cuniculi - rabbit, underground passage.
Distribution
- Reported mainly in commercial rabbitries in the United States.
- Reported worldwide in pet rabbits.
Significance
- Causes venereal spirochetosis in rabbits Spirochetosis.
- Lesions are usually limited to vulval or preputial skin and the mucocutaneous junctions around the eyes, nose and lips.
- Mainly of significance in research and commercial rabbit colonies.
- Prevalence appears to increase with age.
- A closely-related species has been found in wild hares in The Netherlands.
