Etymology

  • Gk: thick skin.

Significance

  • Causes malassezia pachydermatitis   Skin: malassezia pachydermatitis  .
  • Occurs as a commensal in the ear canals of dogs, cats and other mammals.
  • Opportunistic pathogen causing otitis externa   Otitis externa  and a secondary invader in inflammatory skin disease in other mammals.
  • Considered rare in rabbits and has been associated with other dermatological conditions in this species (found in conjunction with sarcoptic mange   Sarcoptic mange  ).
  • A novel yeast species,Malassezia cuniculispnovhas been isolated from rabbits.
