Etymology
- Gk: thick skin.
Significance
- Causes malassezia pachydermatitis Skin: malassezia pachydermatitis .
- Occurs as a commensal in the ear canals of dogs, cats and other mammals.
- Opportunistic pathogen causing otitis externa Otitis externa and a secondary invader in inflammatory skin disease in other mammals.
- Considered rare in rabbits and has been associated with other dermatological conditions in this species (found in conjunction with sarcoptic mange Sarcoptic mange ).
- A novel yeast species,Malassezia cuniculispnovhas been isolated from rabbits.
