Blood biochemistry: lactate dehydrogenase
Synonym(s): LD, LDH, Serum LDH, SLDH
Overview
- May be divided into isoenzymes found principally in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, liver and red blood cells - not organ specific, but useful in assessment of tissue damage.
- Longer half-life than creatine kinase.
Uses
Alone
- Skeletal muscle damage.
- Cardiac muscle damage.
- Liver damage.

Tests
Methodologies
- Varies between laboratories (electrophoresis needed for LDH isoenymes).
Availability
- Widely available.
Technique intrinsic limitations
- Test results most useful when interpreted in conjunction with other laboratory results and clinical findings.
LDH without isoenzymes is so non-specific that it is rarely interpretively useful.
