Trichophyton spp

Classification
Taxonomy
- Phylum: Ascomycota.
- Class: Eurotiomycetes.
- Family: Arthrodermataceae.
- Genus: Trichophyton.
- The Arthrodermataceae are a family of fungi compromising three genera of dermatophytes; Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichphyton.
Distribution
- Some Trichophyton spp worldwide, eg T. mentagrophytes, others only in specific geographical areas.
- T. mentagrophytes is most commonly isolated from rabbits and guinea pigs. Microsporum canis has been isolated on rabbits and guinea pigs as well.
- T. verrucosum has also been isolated from skin of rabbits.
Significance
- Cause dermatophytosis in many animal species worldwide.
