Taxonomy

  • Phylum: Ascomycota.
  • Class: Eurotiomycetes.
  • Family: Arthrodermataceae.
  • Genus: Trichophyton.
  • The Arthrodermataceae are a family of fungi compromising three genera of dermatophytes; Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichphyton.

Distribution

  • Some Trichophyton spp worldwide, eg T. mentagrophytes, others only in specific geographical areas.
  • T. mentagrophytes is most commonly isolated from rabbits and guinea pigs. Microsporum canis has been isolated on rabbits and guinea pigs as well.
  • T. verrucosum has also been isolated from skin of rabbits.

Significance

  • Cause dermatophytosis in many animal species worldwide.
