Honeysuckle (Lonicera)

  1. Is generally found as a branched, spreading shrub/woody climber with stems up to 6 m.
  2. Leaves: variable. Often dark green with paler underside.
  3. Yellow-white flowers with a pink/purple tinge appear from May-late September.
  4. Berries vary in color but in the common species are red, 8-9 mm long.
  5. Fruits contain valerianic acid and xylostein (irritants with low toxicity).
  6. Clinical signs - mild gastrointestinal effects, eg vomiting and diarrhea.
