  1. The normal cat kidney is very pale compared with that of the dog. This is often mistaken for a disease process. The cat kidney has prominent stellate veins on its cortical surface.
  2. Normal dog kidney. Cortex and medulla are easily distinguished on the cut surface. The cut ends of the blood vessels are seen at the corticomedullary junction.
