Eyelid: wedge resection

ISSN 2398-2950

Introduction

  • A V-shaped or four-sided full thickness eyelid wedge is removed to excise eyelid tumor.
  • The procedure also shortens the eyelid margin, which is useful in certain cases of entropion (in combination with the Hotz-Celsus procedure).
  • Conversion of small colobomas into V-shapes enables direct closure.

Uses

Advantages

  • Simple to perform.
  • Up to one quarter of eyelid can be removed in most cats.

Disadvantages

  • Lesions larger than one quarter of the eyelid margin length will require additional reconstructive techniques.

Alternative techniques

  • Rotation flaps.
  • Pedicle advancement flaps.
  • Lateral canthoplasty.
  • Z-flaps.

Time required

Preparation

  • Minimal - routine surgical preparation.

Procedure

  • Usually fairly quick procedure, but if additional flap techniques are  required extra time and skill will be needed.

Decision taking

Criteria for choosing test

  • If less than one quarter of eyelid needs to be removed, resection alone is adequate.
  • If more than one quarter of eyelid needs to be removed, additional techniques needed.
